Army Combat Uniform: Past, Present, and Future

Since its introduction in 2004, the Army Combat Uniform has gone through several changes over the past seven years. Changes have included modifications to the uniform’s design and moving from one camouflage pattern to two. ACU’s original pattern, Universal Camouflage Pattern (UCP), proved to not blend in well with Afghanistan’s terrain of woodlands, mountains, and desert whereas the MultiCam® pattern has. Therefore, uniforms in MultiCam® have exclusively been issued to soldiers in Afghanistan since 201 and the Army is presently performing tests to find a new more universally acceptable camouflage pattern.

Replacing the Battle Dress Uniform (BDU), ACU was a significant redesign. At the time, ACU was described as “shapeless” and “untucked” and consisted of a jacket, trousers, and patrol cap in Universal Camo, along with a moisture-wicking t-shirt and tan combat boots. The new uniforms had Mandarin collars, Velcro fasteners, zippers instead of buttons, knee pouches on pants, and sleeve pockets instead of bottom pockets.

UCP was another drastic change for Army uniforms. A digital camouflage pattern, UCP was based on MARPAT, used by the Marine Corps, and has a color scheme of Foliage and Alpha greens, light brownish grey, and grey-yellow brown. Tested by PEO Soldier Systems with soldiers in Iraq and stateside, UCP was designed to blend into desert, urban, and woodland environments. The pattern, however, proved to be more effective in urban areas but did not blend well in woodlands. The pattern’s lack of black, which is disruptive in urban areas, is said to be the cause of UCP’s decreased effectiveness in woodland environments.

MultiCam® was chosen to replace UCP after testing for a new camouflage pattern solely for the Army Combat Uniform in Afghanistan in 2009. A multi-environmental camouflage pattern, MultiCam® tricks the human eyes’ perception of color by taking on an overall green or tan appearance. A gradient pattern, MultiCam® uses a brown to light tan gradient base, which is broken up by drab green dotted by dark brown and pink blotches. For optimal concealment, the camouflage pattern varies across the fabric, which disguises volume and shape.

When Negotiating – Don’t Accept the First Offer

I enjoy the show “Shark Tank” and when I was watching a recorded episode last night, I thought it was pretty gutsy for an eleven year old boy to ask for more money when the Sharks made him an offer. The move almost cost the boy and his sisters (they were the business owners, though Mom and Dad were there too, and had financed the business to this point) a deal. The family ended up taking the initial offer, and when asked whose idea it was to ask for more money, because it almost cost them, the boy answered that they did get a deal, and that’s what mattered. And the boy was right, he did get the deal, and in fact I believe the Sharks respected the guts the boy showed. After all, the group of investors wouldn’t have massed billions between them if it weren’t for negotiating and taking risks. It does bring me to an important aspect of negotiations. As a general rule, don’t accept first offers.

Some people would insist that you never take the first offer, but I don’t like to say never, so I’ll stick with it being a general rule. There is a concern, like on the episode of “Shark Tank,” that if you make a counteroffer, they will refuse and you have given them a reason to back out of the deal altogether and you get nothing. And this is a valid concern, and could very well happen. In some cases, it may be that the person wasn’t serious about negotiating in the first place, and in others such as the above television show, the shrewd negotiators opened with their one and final option. That or they were just good at negotiation and knew their stance would make the family reconsider. Regardless, the refusal of the initial offer does have the potential to stop the deal. However, more often, the acceptance of the first offer will create the feeling in the initial party that they could have done better. Otherwise, why would you jump at the first offer so quickly? This feeling could turn to remorse and second thoughts, and they may want to change their mind about the deal.

This is especially true when negotiating products or services that are routinely negotiated upon. If you accept the first offer right off the bat, the other side may wonder what you are up to, and suspect that something is being hidden, or that they are missing something about the deal. An exception to this is when negotiating with an unsophisticated or novice negotiator. They may accept the first offer you make and you can just be happy they did so. But in most negotiations, it is not only normal, but expected, that offers and counteroffers will go back and forth until a deal is made. There will be less remorseful and suspicious feelings and both parties will feel better about the negotiated deal. So just remember, as a general rule, when bargaining is expected, don’t accept the first offer.

Promote Your Business Online – You Are Insane If You Aren’t Advertising For Free Here

How much money are you losing by not promoting your business online with one of the most visited sites in the world? Did I mention it was Free!

If you are selling products or services you could be missing out on the single biggest source of new business available without spending a dime.

Regardless of what you sell or offer as a merchant, marketing and advertising your product or services is crucial to your success. You will naturally want to attract as many potential new customers as you can when you promote your business online.

No this isn’t some new fad site that just came out. It’s Craigslist!

Craigslist is ranked number 34 among all websites on the internet for traffic. If you aren’t advertising there you really need to do a reality check. It doesn’t get much better then Free.

Craigslist is a great place to market yourself and your product if you have a definite strategy and stay with it. The key is consistency and adaptability.

Promoting anything online is an art; one that you must learn to adapt to repeatedly as the online markets change and progress. What worked yesterday, last week, or a month ago may bring little or no hits to your website.

That is why having a strategy and staying on top of the ever changing business promotions will put you well ahead of the millions of other merchants just like you struggling to survive in the online world. The first part of your strategy should be to find a creative way to advertise your business. Try targeting cities and areas and post ads to whichever section best matches your product or services.

You must be willing to submit new ads after a few hours or a day to compete with the ordinary people who list the same products or services that you are offering. Every ad should be fresh and engaging. Be aware of the fact that if you post ads to one account more than once every 24 hours your ad will probably get ghosted.

The amount of time spent building the text and HTML or graphics should be well thought out and planned for each venue in promoting your business online. Look to see what the competition is doing and use it for ideas.

Craigslist is a great place to promote a business online if you follow the rules set up to keep people from creating spam or duplicate ads. Don’t post the same ad more than once a week, rotate carefully so as not to draw attention by other users of Craigslist who will notice if you are abusing the rules.

They can be ruthless when finding someone who doesn’t conform and will flag you right off. The power to keep duplicate ads out of Craigslist is in the hands of the users through a system built specifically to flag spam.

Build numerous ads and run them with a rigidness the military would want to mimic. Constantly replacing old ads with fresh ones will keep your business on top of the list. If you use picture ads I suggest that you upload them to a free photo sharing site. You can re-use picture ads if you upload the same picture with different file names.

With Craigslist every new ad is placed on the top while the others are bumped down a notch. This system is in place to your advantage; make sure you’re promoting your business online daily.
The important thing to remember is that whether you are using the Craigslist or other websites to promote your business online, offering a fresh approach to products and services is one key to your success.

Make a daily check list to bring in something unique if not amusing to your online marketing sources. Remember in order to stay in the eye of the cyberspace public you need to constantly change with the moment.
